And so the insanity begins. Two days ago, we found out that there is a State level 4-H scholarship the girls are eligible for. The catch...the deadline is in 4 days. ACK! The girls have make-up basketball games on Monday night and they dance at both half-times, which means no one can leave early. By the time they get home, they both have homework to do, and by then it's time for them to get to bed. Tuesday God blessed us with a snowstorm. Normally I wouldn't find a blizzard to be a blessing, but that meant school was canceled and so were the basketball games. That gave the girls time to fill out their scholarship applications.
At the end of the applications it says: Please include all pages, a current photo, and your high school transcripts. CRAP! Transcripts! Those are at school. There's no school due to the blizzard. ACK! We get the forms filled out as best as they could be. This morning Jay calls and talks to the guidance counselor letting him know whe need copies of their transcripts and we also need their cumulative GPA, the number of students in their grade and their class ranking. He says all that is on the transcript and he'll make a couple of copies of each and have them in the office for us.
They are due in the ISU 4-H office day after tomorrow. What if another storm comes and the mail can't go out? So, I run to the school and get the transcripts. I stop at the post office to see if more postage is needed. I keep them to take to Ames myself to put them right in the post office. That way I KNOW they'll make it there in time...probably even tomorrow. I stop for several drinks at the bar on the way home - ok, I didn't really do that, but by this time there was a part of me that wanted to!
I got home to find that there are other scholarships the girls are qualified for. Some only one girl qualifies for, some they both do. The next deadlines are in 2 weeks. By May 1st all are due.
Then when reading the mail, I see we get a postcard reminding us to fill out our FAFSA. The financial aid forms where we try to convey how we are desperately poor and in great need of money. I'm guessing we won't qualify, but they must be filled out nevertheless. This makes me so glad that I never did well in math. I couldn't stand math. I don't get math. It makes no sense to me. Sooooooo, anything involving numbers automatically becomes Jay's job. :)
I ran to Staples and made several copies of the girls' transcripts and have those safely tucked away in a folder. I have made a list of what scholarships are due and when and which one of the girls needs to fill them out. My job now is to see that they do that.
Because I never went through any of this myself, I am very naive when it comes to what's required and when. A dear friend helped to brighten my day by letting me know that all of this has to be repeated....
every . year . they . are . in . college.
Ok...shoot me now!
The clincher to her comment was when she said "Oh and then if they go on to get their Masters you continue doing it." Masters? I never thought about that. It is possible that we could have 3 children in college at the same time if they decide to pursue a masters degree.
We've only just begun this process and already I'm thinking winning the Lottery might be easier.
