Fair Update & She's Gone

County Fair Update - Pt. 1
Sunday 7/20 - we took our camper up to the fairgrounds and got it all set up and ready for us to live in for the next week. Our 4-H club also had to decorate our booth, so we helped with that in the afternoon. We went home that night to sleep in our beds one last time.
Monday 7/21 - Our kids (including Anna) went up to the fairgrounds along with other 4-Hers and FFA members to clean up all the barns to get them ready to go. Exhibit items were also judged. None of our kids do those types of items (woodworking, sewing, horticulture, etc), but since I'm a leader, I had to be up there to help kids get where they needed to go. In the evening, Ashley & Chelsea had rehearsal for the coronation ceremony. Monday night the kids stayed in the camper, but I really wanted another night in my bed, so I came home.
Tuesday 7/22 - Ashley & Chelsea had to fulfill part of their candidate duties, by passing out ribbons to exhibitors during the dog obedience show and the pet show. In the evening we had the fair parade. Austin & Anna rode on our 4-H club float and tossed candy out. Queen Candidates wore their gowns and had their hair up, and they each rode in the back of a convertible through the parade route.
In the evening, the girls gave their horses baths and banded their manes to get ready for the horse show the next day.

And She's Gone
Our hearts are sad this morning. We took Anna to the drop-off location at 5:00 this morning. Hugs were exchanged and tears were shed. It is amazing how deeply you can come to care for someone in such a relatively short amount of time. She really is a very sweet girl, and I'm sure her parents are very proud of her. Last night we took her out for supper and gave her a gift bag with Iowa souveniers. I also had prints made of all the pictures we took while she was here and gave her a copy of them all, and we made a small decorative scrapbook for her as well. She was so surprised and appreciative.
The whole experience with Anna was a very good one. We were forced outside our comfort zones, and I think that's something we all need to do from time to time. Jay and I were forced to accomidate for one more "daughter", and our children were forced to think about someone other than themselves...hard for an adult to do at times, but especially hard for teenagers. These 2 pictures show Anna transferring her luggage from our vehicle to the van that will transport her and the other 5 students to the airport.

I'll write more about the fair again later, but I have a lot to do today. We have dentist/orthodontist appointments later this morning, and then eye doctor appointments this afternoon. Then tonight Ashley & Chelsea re-pack to get ready to leave in the morning for their FFA summer camping trip. Not at all convenient to have this going on inbetween county and state fairs, but that's ok. I know they'll have a great time. Oooooohhhh...and maybe, just maybe, I can take a nap! Weeeeeeeeee!!
