Yesterday all of my family came for the day and we had a wonderful day topped off by gorgeous weather (although it was a little too cool for the kids to run through the sprinkler so they were bummed about that). Now that we "kids" are older and have our own families and we are all so spread out, it's so hard to get all of us together and coordinate our schedules. We have it so the first weekend in July is our "Family Day" and it's always a fun day. We start off with grilling meat, and my dad is the grilling master (thanks again Dad!). There was so much food to go with it that it wouldn't even all fit on the island. Our exchange student Anna made a traditional food from Spain and it was a big hit as well.
There was plenty for the kids to do, even without the sprinklers. We had a volleyball/badmiton net, lawn darts, bubbles, basketball, sidewalk chalk, horseback rides, go-carts, and baby kitties and cats everywhere. Later in the evening we got out the sparklers, snappers, and confetti poppers for the kids, while the men became go-cart Evel Kneivels and would spin-out, race and jump rock piles laughing like little children. I kept hearing those mom type of words in my head "Don't you come crying to me if you get hurt", and I had an overwhelming urge to shake my finger at them, but I managed to keep them supressed. So instead, I took pictures so I could show the ER physicians what their arm, leg, head is supposed to look like, so they would be able to put Humpty Dumpty together again properly. Thankfully there were no catastrophes except for one poor heart as my dear brother thought it would be fun to "attempt" to jump the rock pile in their car with his fiance and their kids in the car with him (his fiance has a great set of lungs! LOL).
Since everyone had long drives back home, the day ended all too quickly, but it was funny after they left....I was instantly soooooo tired! Jay and the kids were going back to the camper at the lake and all I could think was "I want my bed. I wanna go nite-nite". So I did the evening kennel chores and was in bed by 10pm and asleep by 10:01.
Today all the patriotic decorations will come down and be put away until next years celebration and we will relax. The go-carts are back in the garage. The horses are snoozing away in the barn. The sparkler sticks and the party things are in the dumpster. The volleyball net is back in it's pouch and dishes are all put away. There is nothing left to show for all that went on, except for the memories and that's ok....those will last forever.
