I would not be a good fan if I ignored the massive rivalry game that will take place later this morning. It is the Cy-Hawk War! Every year Iowa has it's own "Super Bowl" when the Iowa State Cyclones take on the Iowa Sqwakeyes, er, I mean, the Iowa Hawkeyes.
We are Cyclone Fans (gee, could you tell?). I worked at ISU and Jay graduated from there. Our basement family room is decked out in all kinds of Iowa State items (clock, chairs, banners, road signs, bobble heads, etc). Jay thinks I got carried away and he says it looks like an ISU store threw up in our basement. I informed him that was the look I was going for. Thank you very much.
Every year we really look forward to this game. No, I mean we REALLY look forward to this game! I stock up on the munchies and beverages and we were our Cyclone Red and Gold shirts (Austin even wears ISU pants). We eat off red & gold plates, and even our dogs wear their ISU collars (no they aren't spoiled...what would make you think that?). And no matter where we go, our ISU car flag waves proud! Actually, I've had the car flag up all week. I even had a cheer I used to do with the kids when they were little. I'd ask the questions and they'd reply:
Who do we love?
The Cyclones!
Who do we wanna beat?
The Sqwakeyes!
And why do we call them the Sqwakeyes?
'Cuz they sqwak like little crybabies! (this is said in a whiney voice)
Ok, so maybe that's not teaching good sportsmanship to my children. What can I say? When it comes to those nasty ol' Hawkeyes, it can't be helped.
Mama has a dark side.
While we love this football game, we do love our children even more, and here's proof....
The football game starts today at 11:00am. It's being played at the Sqwakeyes stadium, which is over 3 hrs away, so we won't be going. However, it is on tv. But, we won't be watching it. Why? Because Ashley has a home football game as well that begins at 1:00pm tomorrow and she will be dancing on the sidelines, so we will be there watching and supporting her instead.
My first thought was "Who is the lunatic who would schedule another game on Iowa's Super Bowl Saturday?????" But then I remember that this is the first year for this college to have a football team, so they probably were so caught up in all the newness and details and over-looked this monumental weekend. It's their first year, so we'll cut them some slack....this time. We'll be there cheering her on, but we'll be wearing our finest Cyclone red we can (thankfully one of her college colors is red too).
So here's to the Cyclones bringing home the traveling trophy!
