Water Globes

Have you seen these things advertised? Oh man, Aqua Globes are a miracle for people like me. When I say I do not have a green thumb, I am 150% serious. Just ask anyone in my family. I cannot keep a plant alive for any length of time. I actually killed one in less than 24hrs. It's not one that I try to kill them, but it does happen. If I buy a plant, and you put your ear up to it, you will actually hear it whimpering, because it knows it's end is near.

I do feel guilty when a plant dies. My intentions are good, but I am a busy wife and mom, and well, good intentions do not get the plants watered - and neither do I. That's my biggest problem is remembering to water them. I even killed a cactus once. How is that possible? You only have to water those things maybe once a month at the most.

When my grandmother passed away this past Spring, each of us was allowed to choose a plant that was given in her honor to take home with us. Honestly, I didn't want to take one home. How disrespectful would I feel killing one of Grandmas plants, I mean come on...That was pressure I just didn't need. We were told to pick one, so Jay and I agreed on the smallest one. At least that would be less guilt - maybe?

To help me remember to water the plant, I put it on the island in our kitchen. Is that an ideal location? No. It's in the way when I do laundry because that's where I fold clothes. It's in the way when I cook or do most things. But, at least there I would notice when the poor leaves would start to shrivel up or the branches would sag. I could almost hear the plant squeak "water can" like the Tin Man did for his oil can when he was rusted. I'd grab a glass and quickly pour water on it. Still a lot of pressure, but I had managed to keep it alive for more than a week, so it would have to stay on the island.

Then one day about a month ago, my life changed forever. I was watching one of my rare moments of tv and I saw an ad for the Aqua Globes. They were one of those "this sounds too good to be true" kind of items, so I didn't pay much attention, although I admit I was curious. A few days later I was in a store and there they were. My curiosity got the best of me and I bought a box. I brought it home, filled it with water and by the next morning it was empty (yea, that's how dry my poor plant was). I filled it back up and I heard a harp playing. No really, I did! Birds chirped, Angels sang, and Grandma's plant let out an aaaaahhhhh.

That's been 2 weeks ago. 2 WEEKS! That's 14 days. That is a long time for me. The globe works great. When I see it's empty, I just fill it back up and go about my day. It's large enough to see it easily and yet, not so big that it's obnoxious. It's working so well I am considering moving the plant off the island.

Here's the kicker - The box came with 2 Aqua Globes in it. I hate to see the other one go to waste, so I'm considering getting a second plant. Whowouldathunkit. Now, if only they made these in a large garden size variety. How cool would that be?
