We drove through horrible downpours for over 25 miles and just as we were about to turn around and head back home, the rain stopped, so we continued on. When we got to the dog park, the man heading up the get together (Dick) said they moved it to their home due to all the mud. He said he had a machine shed we could use if needed more room than just their home.
You have to imagine this visually as I try to explain it....We headed west on a 4 lane highway that is down to 2 lanes due to construction. Both westbound lanes are being worked on, so the 2 eastbound lanes are now 1 way each direction - with me so far? We had to turn right to go to the dog park. When we left the dog park to go to Dicks house, we needed to turn left, but couldn't because it wasn't allowed due to the road construction (still not sure why). So we had to turn right, go about a mile or 2 to find a place where we could turn around and then go back. Dick & his wife live on that highway on the north side of the road, which was now on our right....only you can't use their normal turning spot to get to their driveway because of the construction *sigh*. Dick told us of a small gravel spot to turn on and then we'd have to go "this way and then back that way, etc" and it would get us to his place. Chelsea and I looked at each other and said "Uh, ok, sure. No problem". Well, that was not true. It became a big problem. LOL
We turned right out of the dog park, and drove our 1. 4 miles to a spot where we could turn around. We saw Dicks place ahead on the right and there was his lovely wife outside waving to us. Chelsea and I wave back. We never did see the gravel spot until it was too late. So, we go an extra mile find a place to turn around...again. We see his wife now waving both arms as we get closer and Chelsea and I get the giggles seeing her. "DANG IT!" I yelled. "I missed the turn again!" We crack up as we now drive past his wife who looks at us like we have lost our minds! LOL We turn around AGAIN and head back for a 3rd time. This time, she has crossed the road and is standing in the median to make sure we don't miss it. She's pointing right in a very exagerrated way to show where we are to turn. I am laughing so hard I can barely drive. Chelsea is dying with embarassment saying "omg mom, they are going to think we're idiots." We finally find the spot to turn and get up into their driveway where Molly proceeds to bless their lawn by promptly pooping by their front door. Nice, Molly...way to make a good first impression.
We go inside and see two other people inside, one about my age and the other I'm guessing was in her late 60s. One other couple in their late 20's (another guess) arrived shortly after we did, and that was the extent of the turnout. In the past they have had up to 100 dogs together. Last year they had 40. This year....6. We all know it was due to the weather. It was just plain crappy, with storm and tornado warnings. And it rained the majority of the time we were there.
The host couple showed us their beautifully groomed bichons: Missy & Cujo. Both show dogs, both gorgeous! The only bad thing I can say about either one is that Missy is fear aggressive so she couldn't play with the others.
Molly is very shy and we weren't sure how she would do, but she actually did really good, in my opinion. She stayed right beside me on their couch the whole time, but she did let the other people come over and pet her which is a big step for her and I was very proud of her for that. While sitting on my lap her tail was wagging, so I knew she wasn't hating this. Gabby did get down, but mostly that was to jump up on lap after lap to see who would pet her the most or the longest. She loves attention from people and could have cared less that there were other dogs playing. Once or twice she'd jump down and act like she maybe wanted to play, but only for a second and then she was right back on someones lap.We all talked about any issues we were having or any questions we had and then the hosts pulled out a few outfits. They put a pretty little collar and skirt on Gabby. She didn't seem to
mind the outfit and enjoyed the "aaaawwws" and extra attention she got. They put a "tuxedo" on Cujo and we put both he and Gabby on the grooming table for pictures. We laughed that they were the prom Queen & King. LOL How cute is this picture of the two of them? We all laughed so hard
and someone commented that no, it wasn't the prom, it was a junior high dance because neither the boy or the girl would look at each other, let alone get close to each other. LOL
They also let us try something called the "Anxiety Wrap" on Gabby. She doesn't do well with thunderstorms and she started to shake when one started up while we were there. They put this wrap on her (think wet suit) and the difference was AMAZING! She calmed down so much that she actually laid her head down and went to sleep. I was shocked and plan to get online tomorrow and order one. This picture shows Gabby walking around with the Anxiety Wrap on. It really did make a huge difference.
So that was our day. Once the rain finally let up a little bit, we headed home. Both Gabby and Molly slept soundly all the way home and have pretty much slept the entire evening since being home. I'm glad I went and I'm glad I met the people I did, and it was so much fun to see the other bichons. But, I do wish more could have made it there. There will be another "bash" in September and hopefully the weather will cooperate more for that one.
