Lessons Learned From Dogs

I had someone ask me yesterday why I liked adopting rescued dogs. Why not get a puppy that has no baggage or issues? At the time I said "I dunno. I just do", but that's not true. I didn't go into detail with him because #1, I didn't have them time right then and #2, I knew he wouldn't "get it". You might not get what I'm going to say either, but maybe you will....

It's no secret that I have a big soft spot in my heart for animals...primarily dogs. I just love everything about them and for me they are the best example of how we should live our lives. I received the following in an email a while back and printed it out and having it in my office and kennel office. It really sums it all up:

· When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
· Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
· Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
· When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
· Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
· Take naps.
· Stretch before rising.
· Run, romp, and play daily.
· Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
· Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
· On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
· On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
· When you're happy, dance around & wag your entire body.
· No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make friends.
· Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
· Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
· Stop when you have had enough.
· Be loyal.
· Never pretend to be something you're not.
· If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
· When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Along with that I can add in a few things I've learned from Rescue dogs:

· Delight in the simple things like having somewhere soft to lay your head when tired.
· Let out a deep sigh to express your contentment.
· Love everyone no matter how different they appear to be.
· No matter how many times you are hurt, give everyone a chance to love you.
· Don't live in the past. Today's a new day for a chance at happiness.

. Never be afraid to love again.
· Not everyone is mean. Get to know them without prejudging.
· Be grateful for a little treat now and then.
· Don't be afraid to learn new things like acting silly.
. Everyone deserves a second chance.

If you have a dog take the time to thank them for all the things they have taught you and all the lessons they have helped you to learn. Then sit back and enjoy their licks of appreciation to you.
