A Future Queen?

Ashley & Chelsea had their judging for our County Fair Queen contest today. There are 12 girls from 3 towns all trying to win the crown. All are very active in the fair through either 4-H, FFA, or both, and all appear very deserving of the honor.

But, Ashley & Chelsea looked the prettiest. I'm sure it's not just me who noticed it. I'm sure I saw other moms squirm. Ok, I'm being silly on that party, but they really did look so pretty. I'm so used to seeing them in jeans and t-shirts with their hair pulled up in ponytails, so when I get to see them in their gowns they almost make me cry with how beautiful they look. I'm such a sap.

Mothers were invited to attend for only part of the event. The girls went one by one to have a personal interview with the judges. For that they wore sundresses. After that they changed into their evening gowns. Mothers got to watch the evening gown competition, which really was nothing more than the girls walked up towards the judges, did a turn and left the room. Afterwards they all went outside for photos. The local newspaper was there, as were many moms with their digital cameras poised and ready. After photos were done, the girls were allowed to change out of their evening gowns and back into their sundresses for brunch. They served a super yummy ham, egg & cheese breakfast casserole, fresh fruit, and pastries. Scrumptious!

When everyone was done eating, they invited us all back into the room where they had the evening gown competition. The girls were secluded in one room and came in one at a time. They sat facing the judges (with all us moms looking on) and answered one question, and it was the same question for each girl. When she was finished she was sent into a different room to wait until all girls were done. Once that was complete, we were invited back into the dining area and they went over all the girls' "duties" for the next week and they were handed their fair queen shirt that they will wear off and on all week, along with their sash.
Coronation will be on Wednesday evening. From the little bit I saw, both Ashley & Chelsea have a good chance to win...unfortunately, so do other girls. While I'd be very happy for her if either of my girls won, thankfully I'm not about to pull a Tonya Harding, snapping the kneecap to help with the victory. I'm sure my girls are happy to hear that too. The judging is now over. The 3 judges know who they chose for 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up, Miss Congeniality & Miss Leadership. And, they also are the only ones who know who the next Fair Queen will be. Will it be Ashley or Chelsea? Guess we'll have to wait and see. But either way, I am so proud of how they conducted themselves. So poised, confident and ladylike.
