Happy Birthday Theresa

Today is my sister Theresa's XX birthday (see...still being the nice sister here and not mentioning ages LOL). Biologically Theresa is my step-sister. But in real life, she's just a plain ol' sister to me. I am reminded of a Brady Bunch episode, when Bobby questions Carol's love for him because he's "just a step". Mike tells Bobby "The only steps in this house are the ones leading up to your bedroom". That's how I have always felt about Theresa and Dad (my step-dad).

I can admit I didn't feel that way right in the very beginning. I was not happy my mom was getting remarried, and my dad will tell you that's an understatement, and I wasn't happy having another sibling coming into the picture, which to me meant that I now had one other person to fight the bathroom for and to try to keep from messing my things. Theresa lived far enough away that every other weekend visits weren't an option, so she camed to stay with us every summer. I can remember always being eager to help her unpack, because I wanted to see what cool things she would have since she lived in another state. It was as though she were coming from Egypt or China or something. Every year I would be a little disappointed that there were no magic beads or ancient artifacts in her suitcase, but every year I would eagerly check again. Yea I know, I really needed a hobby.
As time went on, I came to care as much about Theresa as I did my biological siblings. That's when I threw the term "step-sister" out the window and just told people I had 2 sisters. Growing up, I always envisioned having a wedding in June. In my mind, everyone who was anyone was a June bride. However, it always depended on when Theresa's school let out for the summer as to when she could come back and we never knew for sure when in June that would be. There was no question in my mind that I was not going to be a June bride. My mom even said "What about what you have always said?" It didn't matter. I was not going to risk getting married and not having my sister there.
Theresa is a very caring, passionate person. When she believes in something, she is committed 1000000% and will gladly discuss it with you with more conviction that you may imagine. She is also a riot! She makes me laugh so hard with her crazy faces and silly antics. I definitely wish she lived closer to me. I know we could get kicked out of so many places together with our loud voices and even louder laughter. LOL

Love ya Theresa. I hope you have an awesome birthday!!

Let me tell you how I live my life with "step" in there... first of all, I am a BONUS-MOM... and I have a BONUS-SON... we are a bonus to each other. I had an evil "step-mom" and now that's how I look at the word "step"... when someone says they have a "step-dad, mom, sis, bro, etc." I say, do they love you? Do you love them? Then they are not a step, they are a BONUS.. and that is exactly how I introduce myself to anyone when it comes to Kyle. Look at my prior blogs...he has come to live with us (recently) and God blesses us. Hopefully this will help with you too... you begin to be HAPPY about introducing them... :)

On a side note, you all had a WHIRLWIND of a weekend....and your daughter is BEAUTIFUL!! So is your sis... HAPPY XX BIRTHDAY TO HER!!!

Using the word "Bonus" is a great way to state how you feel!
As far as our whirlwind weekend, that's actually a pretty normal weekend, minus the camping thrown in. We're used to being busy and on the go a lot. Thanks for the compliment on my daughter. :)
