Halloween Meal Ideas

Now that my kids are older, we don't trick-or-treat, and since we live on a farm, we don't get any trick-or-treaters at our place, so Halloween isn't a big deal around our home anymore. But I like to do something to make it a fun day. I usually come up with fun meal ideas for supper that night. I've had the worms coming out of cupcakes, and brains (spaghetti). Silly things like that. My kids act like I'm the biggest dork in the world when I do it, but I know they secretly enjoy it.

This year, even though only Austin will be home, I'll still make fun things. I found a site with a few really cute ideas that I know Austin & Jay will get a kick out of....

Monster Toes
Cut a wedge into the end of mini corn dogs to make a "toenail". Cut some tortillas into strips and soften in the microwave between damp paper towels for 30 seconds. Roll each corn dog in a tortilla strip and secure with a toothpick. Bake corn dogs according to package directions. Fill the toenail with ketchup or mustard.

Mummy Dogs
Preheat oven to 375°F. Unroll 1 can of refrigerated crescent rolls and press to seal the perforations. Cut vertically into 20 strips. Cut two slices of cheese into 5 strips. Wrap each hot dog with 2 pieces of dough and 1 strip of cheese. Leave about 1/2" from one end for the "face" and stretch dough to wrap as "bandages" on the mummy's head. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake for 15-17 minutes or until golden brown. Draw features on "face" with mustard or ketchup.

Meatball Spiders
Prepare 12 frozen meatballs according to package directions. In a microwaveable bowl, add 8 slices of cheese and 2 tbsp. of milk and microwave for 1-1 1/2 minutes. Stir to mix well. Dip warm meatballs in melted cheese, roll over shredded cheese and place on tortillas chips. Stick 4 chow mein noodles on both sides as legs, and decorate with chopped black olives as eyes.

Mashed Potato Ghosts
Prepare enough mashed potatoes for 4 people. Then stir 4 ounces of cream cheese into mashed potatoes and stir well. Scoop mashed potatoes into a sandwich-size ziplock baggie, and snip 1/4" off a corner for piping. Pipe mashed potatoes into ghosts that are standing up on the plate, and decorate with sliced black olives.

I'll still make the cupcakes with the "worms coming out of the dirt", but that's just because any time I make those, I am taken back to the time I first made them and the look of delight on Austin's 4 yr old face when he announced that they looked so gross and he knew his sisters would think they were "yucky". It makes me smile each time I make them.

I also have these plastic "eyeballs" that float and I always add a few to each glass everyone drinks from at supper too.

Yep, I'm a big ol' dork alright, and I have so much fun too. LOL

You have given me such good ideas! My oldest son asked me to do something fun for halloween, so you have saved me from trying to actually think of something myself. LOL

Those are adorable and very creative! But you totally stole one of my post ideas! I already have my picture uploaded and the post started for the Mummy Dogs! How funny...you know what they say: Great minds think alike!

I think I'll still post it though, because I did think of a funny name for them and I can't wait to share that.

Are those stock pictures or did you actually make all those? The toes really grossed me out! :-)

LOL! Sorry I "stole" your idea. Can't wait to hear the creative name though.

No, I haven't made these yet, and as time goes on, I'm thinking I won't be making the toes. I have issues with feet and the thought of gnawing on a toe grosses me out.
